The International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru (IIIT-B) is pleased to announce today the general availability of the MOSIP Platform on Github.
MOSIP is being developed as a global digital public good, to form the core of digital identity systems. It is intended to assist Governments and other user organizations implement ‘Good ID’ in a way that is scalable, flexible, and helps avoid vendor lock-in.
The key objectives of the platform are to -
provide the framework to create a fully functional identity system
provide the flexibility for a country to choose the features from the basic framework according to their requirements
maintain the privacy, security and confidentiality of an individual's data
To accomplish this, MOSIP provides the following basic features -
register a person’s identity information
process the information to establish uniqueness
generate a Unique Identity Number (UIN)
authenticate an individual's identity where required to provide access to services such as healthcare, education, social security etc.
MOSIP does all the above while incorporating privacy and security by design, and enabling features where the individual is in control of the usage of their personally identifiable information.
MOSIP provides only the core modules needed for an identity system. It intends to work with existing solutions for customisation and integration at a country or intergovernmental organisation level, creating specific solutions that vary according to a user’s requirements. MOSIP provides support to the core platform, and training and education on MOSIP technology, while private solution providers engage with countries for customization and system integration services, biometrics and devices, country level technology consulting, solutioning for public and private service delivery, and support, maintenance and enhancement services.
Professor Sadagopan, the Director of the Institute, said, about the release - “All of us at IIIT-B are very happy to be able to share the MOSIP Platform with the world. It has been the result of extensive collaboration and input from our partners and supporters, and our focus now will be to foster an open and active community around MOSIP that will take it in new and valuable directions.”
MOSIP is made available under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and it embraces open standards. It is a critical part of our mandate to develop and evolve out in the open, with the involvement of, and contributions from diverse groups and individuals from around the world. As a result, we see this release as just a first step towards making this a vibrant project, carried forward by its contributors, and ensuring that the leading developments in identity management, privacy and security find their way into MOSIP.
We therefore invite contributors to get in touch, learn and use the platform and collaborate with us - below are some resources to get started. Our first open event is a ‘Digital Open House’ Webinar on the 26th of July at 8pm IST (2.30pm UTC) to introduce the project and answer any and all questions. Follow this link to sign up.
