MOSIP Rewind: Looking Back at 2023
Celebrating the achievements, releases, and developments in the project last year
06 JAN 2024

Five years after the project’s establishment, 2023 emerged as a pivotal year for MOSIP, marked by exciting achievements, strategic collaborations, and technological developments. Read on to find out more about our work across MOSIP’s departments.

Showcasing MOSIP

2023 saw MOSIP at the helm of various events showcasing MOSIP’s work and community to its stakeholders, with Open Source Day, Country Conversations in Bangalore, India, Partner Conversations and ID4Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as MOSIP Decode (our first virtual hackathon). These events served as platforms for engaging with a diverse audience, fostering collaborations, and building global capacity in the sphere of digital identity infrastructure.

Another significant event was a visit by Bill Gates in March, where project leaders guided him through a version of the MOSIP Experience Centre. His visit also coincided with a comprehensive rebranding of MOSIP – more than just a cosmetic update, it set the tone for an exciting year filled with innovation and global impact.

We were also honoured to be featured in several prestigious publications, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) website and the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) annual report.

The upgraded MOSIP Experience Center (MEC) at the IIIT-Bangalore played a crucial role in providing a dedicated space for interactive demonstrations and discussions, with plans to recreate the MEC in partner locations around the world.

Technology

Inclusion and Innovation

In the realm of engineering in 2023, Inji and e-Signet became available as new products to enable easy authentication and verification of residents to access various rights and services. Their launch and subsequent demonstrations in global events signalled MOSIP’s dedication to putting digital IDs to use after their creation and distribution. E-Signet also became available as a highly-demanded solution in non-MOSIP-adopting countries.

Other product enhancements included the launch of a CTK (Compliance Tool Kit) 1.2.0 portal, enabling partners to test effortlessly, as well as the completion of the SBI 1.0 certification framework.

The past year was significant for MOSIP’s numerous integrations and collaborations with well-known partners in global digital infrastructure. These included integrations with OpenCRVS (an e-Signet integration for online authentication), and OpenG2P (integrating e-Signet with SSP in the Philippines for online authentication).

MOSIP worked extensively with various interoperability initiatives such as G2PConnect, DCI, and GovStack, as well as its own technology ecosystem to ensure interoperability with partner solutions.

There was also significant progress made by the team on developing and adhering to globally-accepted Open Standards. Integrations of e-Signet adhered to the OpenID4VCI standards, while MOSIP continued its work with renowned international organisations such as IEEE and NIST, co-developing standards for secure biometric devices. The Biometrics Quality Assessment Tool (BQAT) was used to assess Brownfield implementations in Uganda and Mexico. We also collaborated with OIX for the evaluation of our policy framework, which resulted in the publication of a report by OIX.

MOSIP also became a founding member of the Open Wallet Foundation (OWF), under the Linux Foundation.

An active Community forum, improved stable sandbox environment, step-by-step Collab Guides, and improved MOSIP Community response mechanisms also represented MOSIP’s growing desire to foster capacity-building and community contributions.

Also this year, the MOSIP Community and the Ethiopian National ID Programme co-developed an Android Registration Client on MOSIP – a mobile client that will allow registrations to reach citizens in remote and low-network regions.

The project’s focus on inclusion continued in 2023 with developments in our ongoing research on GenderMag with the Oregon State University. We also began a Community of Practice with Aapti Institute, allowing researchers in the Digital ID space to share their learnings and engage in dialogue to make digital IDs more effective and accessible to all.

Dissemination

Empowering Lives Around the World

In 2023, we celebrated the major milestone of 100 million residents registered on MOSIP-based systems. MOSIP initiated work with 2 new countries, as well as a university in Argentina. National rollouts are currently being conducted in 6 countries – Morocco, Philippines, Ethiopia, Togo, Uganda, and Sri Lanka – with a completed pilot in Burkina Faso, and 4 pilots in progress in Guinea, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Madagascar.

Other exciting developments included MOSIP’s first Brownfield implementation in Uganda, and 3 pilots done using the AWS cloud.

Taking our dissemination efforts forward, MOSIP entered into a strategic partnership with CLARCIEV (Latin American Council Of Civil Registration, Identity And Vital Statistics) to develop and support national digital ID infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean.

MOSIP also collaborated with the University of Philippines, University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Morocco, and UNRaf in Argentina for capacity-building and R&D initiatives. The MOSIP Academy also oversaw projects with Alan Turing Institute, UK, and Cylab-Africa at CMU Africa, as well as the design and planning of a global course on Digital Transformation.

Ecosystem

New Collaborations and Initiatives

MOSIP’s journey over the past year was marked by several new collaborations, with universities, inclusion projects, and technology partners around the world. A notable stride was MOSIP's venture into Latin America and the Caribbean, initiating a pilot project in a university in Argentina.

MOSIP’s partner ecosystem grew to 90+ partners, with over 200 engagements. With an updated Partner Programme, MOSIP Marketplace, and a dedicated partner integration environment, MOSIP also welcomed 17 major SI partners, plus 20 more in the pipeline. This growth was showcased at ID4Africa and MOSIP Partner Conversations in Kenya.

As MOSIP’s roadmap for 2024 comes into focus, the team is grateful for all the achievements and success of the project in 2023. We look forward to the exciting developments, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead, as we continue on our vision to empower lives around the world with unique ID.
